Oh Joy!

3rd May 2012

I’ve passed the public library in Bryant Park for a majority of my life just remembering the one time I went in there looking for a book, getting lost in jumble of stairs and hallways, and leaving feeling defeated.

The other day while passing there with Alex, I pointed out the fact that it was the building from Ghostbusters. Alexs face lit up and the next couple of minutes were spent standing in the cold while he tried to capture the massive structures appeal into his tiny phone. The next day we went back with notebooks, pens, paper, and tiny scissors. We spent the day in the library drawing and writing on top of 100 year old thick wooded tables, trying to restrain laughter, and following helpful hand drawn maps to simply find the restrooms.

I love finding places in the middle of such a loud and congested city that are a safe haven for high ceilings, bright sunshine, temperature control, and silence. I love replacing memories of defeat with better ones.

Someday I want to make a list of all the things I’ve failed at, and try them again. Its hard to think of how different my life would be if I gave up after I first felt defeated by:

  • chopsticks
  • photoshop
  • understanding the appeal of Sade

I love giving things in life a second chance. Heres some other things I love in my life, right now:

Bun-less burgers

Putting things down on paper before saying it

Old comic book covers

Top left to bottom Right: Running around in my brand new Converse high tops after two years of wearing nothing but Doc Martens and high heels; Cute tupperware, Posing like Lionel; ridiculously bendy straws

Being aware enough to know when I’m hungry, that my eyes are always bigger than my stomach

Visually organized collections of things

Double double protein style burger from In N Out. Jesus Christ!

When someone sits in a way that I can see the soles of their shoes

Riding bikes and neglecting the seat as much as possible, to imagine what it would feel like if I could fly with absolutely other purpose than to be able glide

My label maker. Pushing the trigger to imprint every letter is SO satisfying

Blaming my hair for unimportant mistakes of which I don’t care to explain

Honorable Mentions:

  • Dog dreaming noises
  • The crackling loop of a record
  • When Alex refers to me in diminutives
  • Tove Janssons Moominpappa characters
  • Debilitatingly good back rubs
  • Pouring hot water directly onto a tea bag

  • Imagining how much more fun it would be if the Occupy movement was more like the fight to keep the community center in Breakin’ 2
  • A dry sponge in the sink just waiting to be expanded by the hot suddsy water that I’m inevitably about to feed it
  • Alexs grandma for calling me a “skinny little thing” and putting a snake in a choke hold
  • Singing the Jigglypuff song
  • Getting film back from my favorite developing place in the city
  • Saying the words “hiccup” and “cherry coke”

Making a Splash at Lake Dolores

6th March 2012

I LOVE water. Its one of my favorite things to drink and bathe in.

While I was telling Alex about my admiration for water, he blew my mind by telling me about these parks that are filled with them!

So the other week, we decided to fly from our respective homes, meeting in Las Vegas and going on a road trip in search of a water park.

We were told about a place about 2 hours west of Vegas called Lake Dolores. The drive was easy enough, it just took a little back peddling off of the highway to get to and it was SO worth it to go on an off season, like we did.

We found a great parking spot

and walked up to see that they had changed the name of the place.

There was a huge lack of staffing, which we assumed was probably due to the bad economy. Undeterred by this fact, and the unusual appearance, we entered.

The best part of going to a water park on an off season is that there are no lines!

It was so much fun in the park that I almost didn’t realize that there was almost no water…

While we were there, Alex and I played some video games and even made a new friend who lived in a near by bog!

at first, our new friend seems a little…timid

but after he warmed up to us a bit, I guess you could say he had a pretty good sense of humor.

I had a great trip to Lake Dolores and didn’t want to leave but Alex and I are planning a trip back to have water park picnic real soon.

My Outfit Anatomy

8th February 2012

Tomorrow marks the beginning of Fashion Week here in New York and I’ve been lucky enough to be asked to help cover the festivities for Tumblr and Milk Studios, so expect to see a lot of photos of pretty people appearing on my Tumblr page!

I don’t know how I lucked into covering such a high end ordeal, because I would consider my “style” a cross between a bum, a grandfather, and a degenerate from 1995 but I’m going to go ahead and embrace that mix as I frolic through tents and buildings for the next seven days.

If you happen to see me and my camera out and about and want to say hi and give me high fives, heres what I may be wearing!

My hat was made for me last Christmas by Reggie. It was specially made, in black, for our loveably big headed friend Handroll. I loved it so much that I asked for one of my own, but its so big, that its now usually held onto m head with a slew of bobby pins.

I got my sweater for a buck from some crazy old man who was selling a garbage bag full of clothes in front of a Rite Aid in the upper west side. I cut up a Black Flag shirt that I’ve worn to the point of no return, through out the years, and attached it to my sweater with some thread and safety pins

After my personal struggles with my favorite English shoes now being made in China, I finally caved and bought a new pair of Docs. Although the leather is a little weaker and the eyelets are made of plastic and not metal, I can get behind the fact that they cost half the price. Also, I broke them in within a week without bleeding from my heel!

It was a windy 20 degrees, when I put the self timer on a pile of abandon Christmas trees and shot these photos and although I don’t wear a winter jacket, heres the secret to how I kept myself warm.

I’m excited to see how other people plan on keeping themselves warm while showing off their fancy outfits, this week!

snow Joy!

26th January 2012

Over the weekend, I got to go to Utah during Sundance. A majority of this film festival is held in Park City, which from what I could gather, is a tiny town on the top of a snowy mountain with one main street strip that was built by elves for wealthy people who love furry shoes, porcelain naked grandmother dolls, Navajo Indians, and a challenging parking situation.

Park city had no parking, so our car load of people left the car at the bottom and took a full bus up this hill. The air was so cold and the fog was so thick, that the windows of the bus were too fogged to look out of. I passed the time writing words on the glass with my fingertip in half hopes that it would fog up before someone could read it.

We walked around in the snow. Slid our wet shoes around an empty mall. Ate candy that came on sticks. Went to a show where a 12 year old played covers of C+C Music Factory with her violin. Made monsters out of pizza crust. I mixed different Pepsi products in hopes of creating the perfect beverage. I tried making a note into a piece of origami with no idea what I was doing. I had a great day in a completely foreign place.

On the bus ride back down the hill, the snow was too treacherous and so we had to get out and take a long walk the rest of the way, in the ice and snow. I anticipated being cold and tired and walking for far longer than my physical state would allow.

About 5 minutes of following the path of slow moving people, slush, and unexpected puddles, I began to wonder why no one was breaking in all of the fresh white snow that lined the lawns along the sidewalks. I jumped into dust-like snow that went up to my knees and began to cause harmless destruction upon nature. Soon enough, my friends joined in and we shoved each other into beds of snow. Once our hands seemed numb enough to not understand how cold it was, we made snowballs and threw them down the street aiming at each other but hitting innocent grumpy pedestrians and extremely cynical children, along the way.

We made snowballs from the fluffy white snow, the muddy shoe stomped snow, the compacted snow on car windshields, even bricks of glorified ice that were almost to heavy to throw and able to give you a concussion. We ran down the entire path laughing at someones misfortune when the got hit, then laughing even harder to see that snow covered face laughing back at you, laughing at them.

When we reached the car nearly an hour later, it seemed like 5 minutes had passed, I was freezing cold while sweating, I had no idea how we found our way, and my entire everything ached from smiling for so long. Which pretty much sums up how I feel at the end of every adventure I’ve gone on, so far, this year.

I had never gotten in such an epic snow ball fight before. I loved every moment of it.

Here’s some other things I love about life, right now:Taking group photos while people prepare for group photos

Colorful shoe laces

Making up imaginary suggestions

goodbye hugs from new acquaintances

Finding out that someone can juggle. (I bet you know more jugglers than you think you do)making silly faces back and forth with babies

Oh Joy! A New Year Edition

12th January 2012

On New Years eve, Alex was visiting from California. Not having much of a plan, we decided to play a game. We would get on the subway, one of us would pick a number, and that would be the amount of stops that we would stay on that train before transferring.

The guidelines were:

  • Avoid ending up in Time Square
  • Get pizza
  • Don’t go home until we witnessed someone vomiting

It was a complete success!
I wore my favorite ears. We drank mysterious teas at a dimly lit bar that was blaring Marquee Moon. We rescued two balloons from their impending doom of being popped by a pair of stilettos by the end of the night, and took them along on our adventures. We ate pizza at the World Trade Center, when midnight struck. We had a toast and drank our favorite sodas. We got yelled at by the cops for climbing on tall blocks of concrete. We found a glowing pokéball in the Financial District. Alex occasionally leaped over sleeping homeless people. I occasionally cried wolf narcolepsy and fell to the floor of a busy path for a refreshing 10 second nap. We ate more pizza. We watched people from a doorway on Bedford Ave. We made a bum chuckle. We gave our balloons faces and ignored the snickering remarks. We choose a nearly empty subway cart, sat across from a very nauseous looking man, and when he did the inevitable, we went home elated.

I spent so many years listening to my Ziggy Stardust album and building the apocalypse in my head, that I was sure by this time in my life I would be in Tenerife, avoiding raining frogs, aliens, nuclear power plants, and telemarketers.

But as 2011 neared it’s end, I completely forgot about my irrational fear of this year. I was too busy enjoying it. I’ve been enjoying it more than i thought i could, every day since.

Here’s some other things I’ve been enjoying, recently:

Acting like a total airhead for fun

Standing on the yellow line where I bet myself that the subway doors will open

Sitting in the seat closest to a window, in any situation.

Feeling out of place, but not out of order

Listening to Graffiti Monsters after I’ve had too much caffeine

Thinking of how wingless birds would fly

Reppin’, yo!

Blowing huge bubbles with my gum

Getting excited about little things

Poking fun at everything!

Ignoring superstitions

Eating cereal out of mugs

Getting to act like a big kid

The look that dogs get when they think that the person coming out of a store is their owner

Huge bowls of popkorn

The designs put on old baking bowls

Owning records I’ve spent my entire adult life searching for

Making my favorite animal appear in unusual places

Going anywhere here and saying 95% of the time “this is the best pizza in New York”

feeding animals

even if they’re not always hungry

These fingers!

Creating pretend parades

eating nachos with a fork

Finding inappropriate uses for office supplies

the number “zero billion”

Spending quality time with things from long ago/ far away

Using my imagination to make things happen
