Fostering Friends

3rd July 2013

I’m part of a pet rescue group that is dedicated to poodle adoption. Being part of the NorCal Poodle Rescue is something in my life that makes me really happy. I get to go up to the hills and play with them, feed them, and then know that they get placed with local people who are able to take care of them and rehabilitate them of whatever little quirks make them a little less perfect.
A couple of months ago, a shy little black poodle mix was surrendered by someone who couldn’t take the fact that he barks at other dogs and men. His name is Charlie and he was so cute that he got swooped up almost immediately! But soon, the next woman had the same complaints about his barking and apparent boy hate, and brought him back.

I got to spend some time with him at a recent adoption event, and kind of fell in love. I took him on a couple of mini walks that day, and after some time and discipline and treats, he was able to bark less at dogs that came by. His adoption webpage says that he would do best with an older person, so that he doesn’t have to leave the house and be around those elements that scare him. But he’s only 18 months old and I feel like he just needs to be introduced to these things he barks at. So I  asked if he could stay with Alex and I, and partake in our life until someone adopts him.

Now we’re foster friends of this adorable little pup! Having Charlie around has been great. We wake up at the crack of dawn and go for 3 mile walks around the lake full of other dogs that he barks at a little less each time.

It took Charlie less than 5 minutes to realize how rad Alex is, and now loves hanging out with him. He’s kind of a sissy looking pup, so Alex has been working extra hard to keep his tough guy edge, lately.

He’s picking up on tricks really fast, he walks really well on a leash, has never shown any sign that he wants to attack anything, keeps our house clean, and sleeps really well in his crate. His only problem seems to be that he’s just too damn cute for his own good, so everyone wants to come up and pet him, and he gets scared and barks.  I’ve been watching lots of Dog Whisper episodes, and applying my new dog behavior knowledge onto Charlie so that he can find a good home in the near future. In the mean time, we’re happy that the weather is nice enough to permit all of use to go out and eat together and take long refreshing walks.
