She’s Crafty!

8th February 2012

After years of lurking around on Cut Out & Keep‘s blog for crafty ideas, I’m really excited to brag that I just got featured on the site!

My tutorials on how to make lavender sandwich cookies, a $400 iPhone case, and a couple of Q&A’s can now be found on Cut Out & Keeps “Crafty Superstar” section.

I think this means that I’m one step closer to being allowed into Martha Stewarts house without fear of a restraining order!

How To Make a Helpful Hand Turkey!

21st November 2011

I love Thanksgiving! I think I fully realized this last year, when I first laid out everything I was grateful for. It was so nice that I began to do it more often. I wish that remembering to be thankful, was this easy for more people but I know that its difficult for most.

Last Valentines day, I made some lovely flyers to place around New York. So after a lot of hand turkey talk with my friends, I decided to do it again! Sort of.

I made hand turkeys and wrote out cheap and simple recipes for Thanksgiving side dishes, as well as the address to the Bowery Mission, which offers food and shelter for homeless people.

Heres how you can make some hand turkey flyers:

All you need is some paper, tape, scissors, and markers.

Take off any jewelry to avoid accidently drawing a turkey that looks like it has tumors.

Trace your hand, silly!

Draw your turkeys head, feet, and 4 bones per poultry.

Also be sure to write out things that everyone could be thankful for. If you don’t know any recipes short & simple enough to be written on the back of a fake feather, then heres some alternative things that I felt people would be able to thankful for, that you could put jot down:

  • Having never wasted time watching Lost
  • Knowing someones phone number by heart
  • Being able to walk in heals
  • Knowing how to tie a tie
  • Being ok with the fact that Coldplay was, is, and will always be “not for me”
  • Not being allergic to my favorite food

Then cut around the turkey and each individual bone.

Fold the four feather things back and forth once, making them easier to tear

Tape the bone pieces to the back so that they appear hidden, until someone plucks a feather!

Gather your turkeys and some tape and head out to help people remember that theres always something neat to enjoy about life.

Make Monday: A Shady Day Activity

26th September 2011

I recently sat outside of Macys and did some people watching, around sunset. People cast some pretty cute shadows!

Next time you’re sitting around a bundle of pedestrians during sunset, let me suggest a fun activity:

  1. Take photos of shadows
  2. print out the photos
  3. make your very own shadow monsters!

If you’re a total hermit, you could also download these photos that I took and not have to worry about making eye contact with strangers.

How Tuesday: Make A $400 Book

21st February 2011

As much as I love my iPhone, I seem to misplace and drop it to the extent where that must look pretty questionable. I don’t do well with phone cases, so I made a new home for my phone out of an old book.

for this project, you will need:

  • a phone
  • a hardcover book that is larger than said phone
  • a pencil
  • paper glue
  • a pencil
  • a piece of ribbon
  • an Xacto knife
  • a brush or sponge of some sort

place your phone where you plan on it being planted

trace the phone with a pencil

cut into he outlined area, a few pages at a time

continue cutting into the pages, being aware that as you get further into the book, the pages are going to try to shift your alignment.

So make sure that you’re pages are aligned, by making an L shape with your book before cutting

cut until your phone becomes flush with the book

then start gluing. Starting from the back of the book, place some glue on the page and even it out with a brush.

This helps make sure that the pages don’t get wet and wavy because of the glue.

on the last full page, glue only around the edges and attach a ribbon. Since its right below the phone, the ribbon helps pop the phone out of the book. Not to mention that it really works like a bookmark, while gluing the pages. Every couple of pages of gluing, press the pages together to make sure that everything is properly aligned. The ribbon is a good marker that helped me remember where I left off.

Let it dry overnight, and then you have the worlds most overpriced book!

Make Monday: ohPodcast!

14th February 2011

Photo from my attempt to spread love through the city with balloons, last Valentines Day.

Other than the increased odds of catching my favorite guilty pleasure movie on tv, my favorite part of Valentines day is the excuse to spend hours rummaging through my music for love songs (or breakup songs, depending on the timing). To stay up with the times, this year, I cracked open Garageband and made my first ever podcast.

Things included in this podcast:

  • Banter about Ike and Tina Turner
  • Love songs written for temperamental people
  • A really bad British accent. Like, really bad….I wouldn’t even call it British.
  • The tone of my voice at 4am
  • Brontosaurus wailing sounds
  • Useless facts about Hallmark and Gang of Four
  • an explanation of why I’m including a link to download this Valentines Day card from the Simpsons

Things NOT included in this podcast:

  • a box of chocolates
  • seamlessly smooth edits
  • bad music

Download my podcast here!

p.s. If someone who has published a podcast, can help me figure out how to get an rss feed for this file, i would really appreciate it…
